Meteora from Athens: why the train and bus take 5½ hours each way, 14-hour day tours from €72 and the better plan of one night in Kalambaka

Meteora is about 5½ hours from Athens by Intercity train and replacement bus, so a day trip is a 14-hour tour from €72 or a night in Kalambaka. The tours compared, the six monasteries, the dress code and the overnight options from €120.

💡 The Short Version: Meteora is not a day trip by public transport. The Intercity train from Athens reaches Palaiofarsalos in about 3 hours, then a replacement bus covers the last section to Kalambaka, so the journey is about 5½ hours out and 5 hours back. The practical choices are a 14-hour tour, from €72, or one night in Kalambaka. A coach tour reaches Kalambaka in about 4½ hours with a break and brings you home the same night; a night there gives you the monasteries without a late return. Or book a tour: Meteora Monasteries Day Trip at 9:00 AM with Caves & Lunchad is from €84 and Athens: 2 Days in Meteora with 2 Guided Tours and Hotel Stayad is from €120 (GetYourGuide).

What to see

The six monasteries

Great Meteoron · Varlaam · Rousanou · St Nicholas Anapafsas · Holy Trinity · St Stephen

Six monasteries stand on the rock pillars above Kalambaka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tours see all six from viewpoints and go inside three, depending on the day’s opening hours; the Ministry of Culture’s hours table gives no single schedule, because each monastery has its own opening hours. On the 9:00 tour the stops are the Great Meteoron (1 hour), Varlaam (45 minutes) and St Stephen (30 minutes). The tours add the Hermit Caves of Badovas, which are seen from outside only.

The dress code and the steps

Skirts below the knee · covered shoulders · 10 to 20 minutes of steps

At the monasteries women wear a skirt at or below the knee with shoulders covered, and trousers are not accepted; men wear no sleeveless shirts and no shorts above the knee. The Visit Meteora listing says skirts are lent free at the entrance of each monastery. The route from the car park to each entrance is stairs: 10 to 20 minutes at a slow pace. Entry is paid in cash. Toilets at Varlaam charge €1.

Planning the trip

  1. Decide the length first. One day is a tour; anything slower is a night in Kalambaka.
  2. Book the tour from Larissis Station. The 8:00 and 9:00 departures both start there, and the 9:00 one avoids the earliest start.
  3. Carry cash. The monastery gates take cash only.
  4. Check the timetable for the train. The rail section is bus-replaced and the times change by season.
  5. Dress for the gates. Skirts below the knee, shoulders covered, no shorts above the knee.

Meteora is the longest of the day trips from Athens. Delphi is the combination for two days, and Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio is the full day in the Peloponnese. What to book before you go to Athens lists the city tickets, Athens public transport covers the metro to Larissis Station, and where to stay in Athens compares the areas.
